Tennis Memphis Inc. is a non-profit youth development organization and a 4-star chapter member of the USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning Network. Our mission is “to build a better community and enhance lives through tennis and education.” We operate and manage the City of Memphis’ public tennis facilities, consisting of 7 strategically placed neighborhood tennis centers and 62 tennis courts.
Tennis Memphis has been the leader, supporter, and advocate for public tennis in Memphis since 2001. Our participants are diverse, and we strive to reach youth ages 4-18 who are under-resourced and considered at-risk. Over the last eighteen months, we’ve implemented a standardized city-wide youth tennis development curriculum, GreatBase Tennis. This unique system provides continuity and quality to our programs and provides recreational and competitive pathways for students of all levels.
Our low cost and free programs such as Tennis and Tutoring, Junior Development, and NJTL Tennis Summer Camps, are offered after school and during the summer at public tennis centers, community centers, and parks. We participate in community events and strategically partner with other youth development organizations to market the sport of tennis as a viable option to other popular sports like basketball, football, and baseball.
Financial assistance is available for all youth programs and an average of 80% of participants paid a reduced rate or attended for free. In addition, we offer comprehensive programs for youth, adults, and seniors, including USTA adult and junior league play and tournaments, clinics, lessons, mixers, and more for the benefit of the public.
Our vision is that all Memphians, regardless of geographic location or socio-economic status would have access to high-quality tennis and education enrichment programs that are accessible, affordable, diverse, and character focused, held at vibrant, active neighborhood tennis centers.
We partner with a number of local, state, and national organizations to further our work in reaching under resourced youth through tennis and education enrichment programs. Our partners include:
Shelby County Schools (SCS)
Memphis Tennis Association (MTA), local Community Tennis Association
City of Memphis, Division of Youth Services-Memphis Ambassadors Program
City of Memphis, Division of Parks and Neighborhoods
Boys' and Girls' Club of Memphis
United States Tennis Association (USTA) Foundation, the charitable arm of the USTA
Other local nonprofits and community organizations
We work with the MTA and Shelby County Schools to provide training in our tennis curriculum to local coaches and P.E. teachers and offer additional teaching resources on our website. We partner with local organizations, such as the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Memphis and other nonprofits to provide tennis and education enrichment as part of their program offerings.
As a 4-star NJTL Chapter of the NJTL Network of tennis nonprofits, we partner with the USTA Foundation to provide affordable, accessible tennis and educational programs and resources to under resourced youth and families.
Partnership with USTA Tennessee includes hosting Net Generation programs, USTA adult and junior leagues and tournaments, and Play Days to promote the sport of tennis and provide opportunities for play. We continue to strengthen our partnerships through coordinating and meeting with partners on a consistent basis to share and evaluate student experiences and program effectiveness. Assessments are then made on how we can work together to further expand opportunities for area youth programs.
